Get Swept Up!

More than 500 volunteers were out in force today cleaning up Starkville in advance of the start of Mississippi State University’s upcoming football season.

The seventh Get Swept Up event got under way at 7 a.m. today and continued through 1 p.m.

Volunteers picked up litter and removed weeds and trim growth along bike paths and sidewalks. This was the second year participants recycled items they collected.

The event was the culmination of a month-long effort to encourage local residents to make needed repairs, perform landscape improvements and guide similar upgrades.

“What a great way to welcome visitors to our lovely community,” said Tasha Hill, Greater Starkville Development Partnership special events coordinator.

She expressed gratitude for work of Project Coordinator Libby Gerald. “This could not have been done without” Gerald’s leadership, Hill said.

The Bulldogs start the 2010-11 campaign at home against the University of Memphis Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
